my mother made me a beaded necklace

a beaded ring

and also a bracelet

gypsy colors

were the ones she used

indio colors but

fluorescent

and I think to myself

why is it that mothers always know

what kinds of things their daughters like

like when you were small and

she’d come home with two new dresses

one that you just loved

but expensive and

one that didn’t strike

your fancy but was

cheaper

kitchen talk

speaking of the many

tragedies that come in

life most times unexpectedly

I uttered with resolution,

“nunca sabe uno lo que le va

traer la vida de un momento

al otro.”

sintiendo en un instante

todo lo que ha sentido en su vida

responde mi abuela

“no, pues no,”

thought perfectly balanced

with routine rinsing of coffee cups and spoons

“¡qué barbaridad!

¡pues si supiera uno,

pues qué bárbaro!”
